Meeting the Program Goals
1. Utilize medical knowledge and technical skills in the systematic process of patient evaluation, diagnosis and treatment.
The PA program鈥檚 curriculum utilizes comprehensive testing to measure medical knowledge. Each graduating class has reached a 100% pass rate on a comprehensive summative exam. Technical skills, patient evaluation and ability to formulate diagnoses and treatment plan are measured prior to graduation in the Summative Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). 95% of graduating students have received a passing score on the first try.
In terms of preparation for medical practice, 96% of surveyed alumni agreed or strongly agreed that the program prepared them to utilize medical knowledge and technical skills in the systemic process of patient evaluation, diagnosis and treatment.
2. Incorporate critical thinking and problem-solving skills in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of patients.
On our graduate survey, 96% of responding graduates agreed or strongly agreed that the program prepared them to incorporate critical thinking and problem solving in the care of patients. 100% of students received passing scores from clinical preceptors on critical thinking and medical decision making.
3. Provide patient care consistent with current evidence-based guidelines, and legal and ethical standards.
The program incorporates courses in evidence-based medicine and healthcare ethics. 100% of students successfully passed those courses which addressed evidence-based medicine and healthcare ethics. On our graduate survey, 96% of responding graduates agreed or strongly agreed that the program prepared them to incorporate critical thinking and problem solving in the care of patients.
4. Demonstrate the highest standards of conduct with empathy, cultural sensitivity, and spiritual integration with respect for patients, their families, and other health care providers throughout medical practice
The PA program stresses instilling professionalism in PA education. 100% of students have earned a passing grade in each of two Professional Practice and Policy courses. In addition, 96% of graduates feel their education in the PA program prepared them to maintain the highest standards of conduct and professionalism. Clinical preceptors rated our students with a mean Likert score of 4.77/5 (95%) in professionalism across 3 cohorts.
5. Practice team-based, inter-professional health care.
Inter-professional exposure and immersion are core to the PA curriculum. 100% of graduating students have passed Inter-professional Education courses (IPE) during the didactic year of the program. Integrated IPE curriculum includes live simulation, workshops, and online modules. The importance of team-based care is stressed in the clinical year as well. Each rotation, students work in team-based care and compile reports, reinforcing the importance of other members of the healthcare team. In a survey sent to graduates, 96% felt their PA education prepared them to practice in team-based care.
6. Acquire knowledge and skills to provide holistic medical care and humanitarian service to underserved populations locally and/or globally.
Humanitarian service is stressed in the PA curriculum. Each student must take a course in Global Health Engagement in order to progress in the program. Across all cohorts, 100% of students have earned a passing score in this course. Students are also involved in community health outreach events on a recurring bases. These events include health fairs, health screenings, community outreach and pre PA informational events, at the college and high school levels. The result meets our activities requirement.
